Goal/Initial Research
Our user research findings highlighted that many apartment seekers in Calgary, Alberta are frustrated with the slow and clunky experience of existing apartment listing websites. They feel that navigating these sites is a tedious process and that they often have to sift through irrelevant or outdated information.
Another significant pain point that emerged from our research was the difficulty of finding pet-friendly apartments, especially for dog owners. Many users reported feeling frustrated with the limited search options available for pet-friendly units and the lack of detailed information about pet policies.
As a response to these insights, my apartment rental responsive website aims to provide a seamless and user-friendly experience for apartment seekers in Calgary. My platform focuses on speed, convenience, and accuracy, making it easy for users to find relevant listings quickly. Additionally, I have placed an emphasis on providing detailed and up-to-date information on pet policies for each apartment, making it easier for pet owners to find a home that suits their needs.
Wireframes
As part of my project to learn how to develop responsive websites, I created wireframes for phones, tablets, and desktops. I created both paper and digital wireframes to help visualize and test the website's layout and functionality. These wireframes served as a blueprint for the final design, ensuring that the user interface was optimized for different devices.
I also incorporated a dog-friendly symbol under each apartment listing to make it easier for users to quickly identify pet-friendly options.
The Final Product
Usability Testing: After creating digital wireframes for my apartment finding website, I conducted usability testing with a moderated group. The primary user-flow of browsing and finding an apartment revealed that I missed an opportunity to create a user flow for landlords or tenants, which could have expanded the app's target audience.
To address this, I reevaluated the website's user flow and incorporated features that allow landlords or tenants to post or view available apartments, creating a more inclusive experience for all users. By expanding the website's functionality to include these additional user flows, I was able to broaden its appeal and increase its potential user base.
Mock-ups: After finalizing the wireframes and incorporating the feedback from usability testing, I began the process of creating mock-ups for my website. The mock-ups followed the wireframes closely in terms of layout and content, but I added some color and design elements to make the website more visually appealing and engaging.
To ensure that the mock-ups were aligned with the needs of the target audience, I conducted further usability testing with a different group of users. This testing allowed me to gather feedback on the visual design and overall user experience of the website. Based on this feedback, I made additional refinements to the mock-ups, ensuring that they met the needs of the target audience and provided a seamless user experience.
Prototype: I had envisioned a layout that involved automatically expanding the list or map section of the prototype when the mouse enters, allowing users to quickly begin searching in either method quickly and easily. Unfortunately this project is left partially incomplete, as I determined I had developed a strong understanding of responsive websites and eagerly moved on to my next project.
